OIL PAINTING SERIES

Saturday’s, Nov. 22nd, 29th, Dec. 6th, 20th

1:00 - 4:00 pm

This will be a four week course to learn the basics of landscape painting.  Students will work on individual projects with input from me and each other. We will start with how to identify your subject and break up a picture to transfer to your canvas. We will also discuss how to use these skills in an outdoor setting, but due to the time of year, we will be working from a photograph. I will cover setting up your canvas including ideas on color, and how to use paint and texture to create depth. We will explore the different tools available to you including pallet knives and the different brushes and their individual attributes and functions; different mediums can be used to create different effects.  With each class only being 3 hours, students may wish to only create one canvas over the course of the class, or create one scene and create a series 2 or 3 paintings with different colors to see how the changes can affect the mood of the scene.

You may wish to try and create a painting a week but you will find that 3 hours is not a lot of time, and changes how you block in and apply paint when you are working quickly with many wet layers.  By the end of the course students should have at least one completed painting. *Bring a snack and water.

My name is Matt Aiello. In the late 1980’s, I was an art student in Salt Lake when a call went out to have people go to a local H.S. and teach some art classes.  I went and ended up staying in the classroom. I have been a teacher in the Moscow School District since 2004. I am not an art teacher but it has been a hobby that I have enjoyed most of my life.  Around 2021 I began spending more time painting and have been prolific in my endeavors.  I have had pieces featured in several shows at the 1912 center and in 2025 I receive an award for second place in the Plein Aire exhibit.I enjoy time outdoors and try to capture the feel and beauty of nature whenever I paint. I am hoping I can bring my experiences and ideas to help you learn to create your own art.

*Registration is not complete until class fees have been paid.
