Basic of Drawing
April 7, 9, 14, 16, 21, 23, 28, 30
Tuesdays and Thursdays 6:00 – 7:00 pm
$160 for all 8 classes including all materials
These fun and intentionally low-stress classes cover the basics of sketching with a focus on objects and subjects from nature. We will also be cultivating both a mindset and an ongoing sketching practice designed to support the rapid development of drawing skills and a lifetime of enjoyment in putting pencil to paper. Each of the 8 classes will begin with (1) a short introduction and discussion—on topics such as line, form, accuracy, and shading—followed by (2) skill development exercises, with (3) the remainder of time in class spent sketching your choice of the plants (week 1), insects (week 2), birds/reptiles (week 3), and mammals (week 4) you’d like to focus on. For the purposes of this class, “sketching” means “to quickly (relatively speaking) capture the essence of the subject on paper, without rendering all of the details or attempting to produce a ‘masterpiece’.” We will be working primarily with graphite on drawing paper, with the addition of colored pencils on select sketches.
All materials will be provided.
Melanie Thongs is a color pencil artist who got started by taking a self-paced Nature Journaling course from the Cornell Lab of Ornithology. She then immediately signed up for the Natural Science Illustration certificate program through the Rhode Island School of Design, which she completed in three years, with an emphasis on illustrating wild birds. Her art combines natural beauty and aesthetic appeal with scientific accuracy as she seeks to share the wonder and fascination she feels while observing and encountering wild creatures in their natural habitats.
Class will be held at Moscow Contemporary
