HISTORY

Moscow Contemporary began as an idea for how to preserve  the unique space at 414 S. Main Street as a downtown gallery. What started as a proposal for a public-private partnership with the University of Idaho  evolved into a new standalone nonprofit.

“The building at the corner of 5th & Main Street has been many things over the decades. This location was first occupied by Shields’ retail storage shed, but he replaced it with the current brick structure in 1891. The building was divided into one sizable space for a general store and two additional storefronts on the south end, which were originally leased to a grocer and a harness maker. Around 1905 Nathaniel Williamson, an extraordinary salesman known for his showmanship, opened his Boston Store in this space. For several years the location played host to Williamson’s “Great Fall Fair,” the precursor of today’s Latah County Fair. Later, following Williamson’s relocation, the building was leased to the Golden Rule general store, which ultimately became the tenth J.C. Penney’s franchise in the country.”

Since then, it has been split up and been a bookstore, Moscow TV & Cable (there’s a bank of defunct phone lines in the back), a Radio Shack, and more.

A convergence of factors led to the Main Street space becoming a gallery. The University of Idaho had demolished the building housing the campus gallery to make way for a new life science building. No formal plans for a new gallery had been made. Businesses on Main Street were moving to the new mall. The commercial exodus created a vacuum and opportunity. UI Architecture professor Bill Bowler designed a gallery to occupy two of the original spaces into one of the best exhibit spaces in the Pacific Northwest. For 36 years it was the Prichard Art Gallery. Now Moscow Contemporary continues the legacy of this great space, enriching the cultural life of Idaho, this community, and creating cultural connections and economic vitality.

We created Moscow Contemporary to SAVE THE GALLERY! Having achieved that goal, we’ve grown into a vital arts and arts educational organization providing critically needed enrichment for our community. In early December 2023 we were informed by the building owners that they had a cash purchase offer. To complete the sale of the building we needed to vacate. This brings an end to nearly 40 years of one of the best galleries in Idaho. It does not signal the end to MosCo! Our growth and community integration b=powers us forward. We will have a new temporary home to continue arts programming while we develop long term plans for a permanent home. In the meantime all of our educational programs continue through partnerships with dedicated community organizations that value the services we provide. Thank you to the 1912 Center, Inland Oasis, and PCEI.
